IT’S ALL ABOUT THE GOING-OUT TOP
Not into dresses? Create a killer evening look with our edit of going-out tops…
Dakota Johnson wears a going-out top on the red carpet, left, and the Saint Laurent catwalk, right.
In the late 90s and 00s, the going-out top was the cornerstone of every woman’s evening wardrobe. A jazzy top and jeans (probably bootcut) became the go-to combo for celebrities hitting the red carpet and real women going out on a Saturday night alike. Our dedication to the look was such that ‘jeans a nice top’ became the standard answer when friends enquired what we would be wearing at the weekend. Then, dresses and jumpsuits kind of took over when it came to getting dressed up, and the collection of going-out tops we’d amassed was quickly relegated to the back of a drawer. Until now.
Going-out tops made a comeback on Saint Laurent’s SS17 catwalk, and celebs like Dakota Johnson have been bringing them back to the red carpet. So, what gives a top ‘going-out’ status? This season, it’s directional necklines (one-shoulder, Bardot, cold-shoulder) bright colours, metallic and ruffles. Denim is a no-brainer pairing, but smart trousers and chic skirts work too. Fuss-free and effortlessly sexy. Now, to the pub…
